Explore the captivating world of Norman Lindsay's book illustrations, spanning a prolific career that shaped the visual landscapes of numerous literary works. This exhibition showcases Lindsay's diverse artistic talents through various types of book illustrations, highlighting his mastery in bringing stories to life through visual storytelling.
Norman Lindsay (1879–1969) remains one of Australia’s most renowned artists, celebrated for his paintings, etchings, and writings. He was also a prolific illustrator of fiction and poetry.
For the first time on exhibition will be his original illustrations to Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Pip, Estella, Magwitch and Miss Havisham, as well as other characters come to life pictorially.
Along with original illustrations to two of Lindsay’s own fiction, Age of Consent and Halfway to Anywhere and Douglas Stewart’s play Shipwreck, this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into Lindsay’s imaginative genius to enrich and complement the narrative of literature and poetry.
Visitors to the exhibition will see Lindsay’s ability to blend whimsy with realism, classical mythology with modern sensibilities, and profound social commentary with satirical humour.
An impressive collection of rare volumes containing his illustrations will be displayed confirming Lindsay as one of the great illustrators.
