UNDER THE AUGUST SKY
The Spirit and Colour of the Mountains
An exhibition by Blue Mountains artist and teacher MAY ZIADE.
In contrast to the nocturnal imagery and dark palette of her earlier exhibitions, Under the August Sky presents expressive landscapes that use the colour orange for the sky – a colour associated with the sun and light, also the colour of August!
Under the August Sky is inspired by living in the Blue Mountains, nature’s tangled patterns of leaves, branches and trees in her bush backyard, and those dazzling orange sunset skies! Symbolically, the organic, multilayered and intertwined patterns in the landscapes, and the use of orange, a colour associated with things sacred, provided an opportunity to transform these paintings into something more mystical and spirited.
Artworks incorporate lyrics such as ‘flowers on the hilltop bloomin’ crazy’ as inspiring this series of paintings. In either case, their essence is perfectly captured via the Bob Dylan lyrics serving as titles. The paintings in this exhibition are mainly acrylic on canvas and all have been framed in Tasmanian oak.
