Directors Notes on important dates and on the audition process:

Hi everyone,

I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the auditions for Cloudstreet on Sunday 20th June at 11.00am, and very excited about this play. It is a play of epic proportions, adapted from an iconic Australian novel, by much loved Australian writer Tim Winton. Cloudstreet has a rich storyline and the play adaptation is a beautifully written text - which I have done my utmost to preserve in editing the shortened text we will be using. The original play is 5 hours long - ours will run for 3.5 hours (2.5 hours of stage time).

First some important dates to put in your calendars:

Information night:  Wednesday 16th June @ 7.30pm, Side Hall, Glenbrook Theatre
Auditions:  Sunday 20th June from 11.00 – 4pm @ Warrimoo Hall,
Rehearsals:  Monday & Wednesday evenings @ 7.30pm, from 28th June through to 3rd November
Saturday 8-11am, on 25th September and 2nd October (school holidays)

Tech rehearsal:   Sunday 31st October @ 9.00am-5pm (theatre & side hall)
Dress rehearsal:  Sunday 7th November @ 9.00am-5pm (theatre & side hall)
Performances:    Friday 12th November: 7.30pm-10.30pm (6.00pm call)
Saturday 13th November: Matinee: 11.00am – 2.30pm (9.30am call); Evening: 7.30pm-10.30pm (6.00pm call)
Sunday 14th: Matinee: 11.00am – 2.30pm (9.30am call)
Friday 19th November: 7.30pm-10.30pm (6.00pm call)
Saturday 20th Nov: Matinee: 11.00am – 2.30pm (9.00am call); Evening: 7.30pm-10.30pm (6.00pm call)

The Audition process

1. Are the auditions open or closed?: The auditions will be open, using ensemble scripts, with additional scripts for soliloquy and narration.

2. Is it necessary to come to the Information Night?: It will definitely help you to prepare if you attend, but if you can’t please let us know and we will make a note to expect you at the   auditions. That will help us with organisation.

3. How many characters are there in Cloudstreet?: There are 43 characters in the play. Some actors will have multiple roles. We will need around 20-24 actors to cover the 43 roles.

4. Will the indigenous roles in the play be played by indigenous actors?: YES, absolutely.

4. Will I need to be there for the whole day (11am-4pm)?: Not necessarily, but those auditioning for the larger roles will very likely be needed longer than others. We will work out the schedule of audition pieces and actors on the day once we know how many are auditioning for which roles.

5. How much prep do I need?: You will need to read the Synopsis of Scenes so that you know the storyline and so you can put the audition pieces in context.
Prepare well for the characters you are interested in as there is likely to be strong competition for a number of these roles.
Cold reads are less likely to be successful.
You do not need to memorise the lines. You may use the script.

6. Do I need to be a financial member of Glenbrook Players to audition?: You don’t need to be a member to audition, but you will need to be once you are cast.

7. Is there parking at Warrimoo Hall? There is quite limited parking at the venue, so please carpool if you can. You may need to park further along Eley Hawkins Drive.

8. What facilities does Warrimoo Hall have?: The facility has a kitchen, toilets, tables and chairs and a stage. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

9. What do I need to bring:   Your lunch; a bottle of water; milk & sugar substitutes if you need them
The Scene Synopsis and the Audition Script.
Lots of energy and patience

I will prepare the rehearsal & production schedule once we have a full cast, so please consult your calendars carefully - and ask your families about important family obligations coming up - so that you know if there are any dates when you are not available. There is a degree of flexibility regarding unavoidable absences - please let me know in advance - and I will try to accomodate you. Attendance for the Dress Rehearsal is required without exception, as this will be a preview performance with an audience.

That’s it! Get the creative juices flowing, and we’ll see you on Sunday 20th June.
