In 1803 convict, William Buckley escaped an embryonic settlement in the land of the Kulin nation (now the Port Phillip area). Some months later, cold and starving he was saved by the local Aboriginal people and for 32 years lived as a Wadawurrung man until, in 1935, former bounty hunter John Batman arrived in the area. What happened next saw the Wadawurrung betrayed and Buckley eventually broken. The theft of Kulin country would end in the birth of Melbourne city. Hear author Adam Courtenay dig deeper into this incredible story.
