In his oratorio Elijah Mendelssohn paints a vivid picture of this dramatic biblical story. Rowen Fox has selected the well-known choruses and the beautiful Bass and Soprano arias to tell the epic story in all its splendour.
Over the last few years the choir has been on a conscious journey to increase our musicianship and our repertoire, including an ability to tackle the larger works of the classical canon. Our aim has been to take both choir and audience together on this musical journey providing a variety of musical genre and presentations. Sometimes we create the opportunity to present a classic work like Mozart Requiem with expanded chorus and full orchestra. On this occasion we tackle Mendelssohn’s giant oratorio with community choir resources of professional pianist, cellist and organ with Soprano and Bass soloists. The focus is to reveal the power of the biblical narrative and richness of the Romantic choral writing.
Particularly in the last few years we have honed our craft by including much more challenging Romantic works such as Haydn’s The Seasons, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42, and Rheinberger’s The Star of Bethlehem, all of which required greater control and nuanced expression than demanded by our previous repertoire. These works have expanded the singers’ techniques and assisted us to develop the dramatic flair for which we have become known. We now approach the new challenge of Elijah with enthusiasm and increasing maturity.
