Woodford Academy are proud to present 'TRACKING ERIC AND ELEANOR DARK: Walking from Emu Plains to Mt Hay in 1940' an illustrated talk by Dr Margo Beasley for our open day on Saturday 17 August 2019 from 1pm - 2pm.

In 1940 Dr Eric Dark, well-known Blue Mountains medico and rock climber, led a small group on a cross country walk from the Nepean River to Mt Hay near Leura. The group included Dark's wife, distinguished novelist Eleanor Dark. This feat was first imagined by Europeans in 1789 when Governor Phillip sent out a party which returned 5 days later, defeated by the rugged topography. The Dark party completed the task in two and half days in bush as virgin as 150 years earlier. This illustrated talk will discuss this remarkable walk, contextualising it with details of Eric Dark's life, Eleanor Dark's fiction and changing European perceptions of Blue Mountains terrain. Dr Margo Beasley is an historian and writer.

Museum/Café Open: 10am-4pm
Museum Entry: Adults $10, Seniors/ Students (5-15yrs) $8, Family $25 (2 adults, 2 children), Child under 5 free
Your ticket includes: Museum entry, talk & guided museum tour

The Woodford community also need your help to realise the final 'missing piece' in the Woodford Reserve 'Layers in Time' heritage loop walk.

The proposed path will improve community access to new heritage interpretive signage in the Woodford Reserve. Originally 'hanging swamp' the Reserve ground is often very soggy, making it difficult to traverse safely. Only the projects with the most votes will be eligible for funding. Voting is open to all Blue Mountains residents until 15 August 2019. …Please vote via the website link below.

As a volunteer managed National Trust property, all proceeds from Woodford Academy open days and events directly contributes to the conservation of the Blue Mountains oldest building.
