‘Ettie’s Diary’ Book Launch by Kate O'Neill

Sat 16 Mar 2019
You are invited to the book launch of ‘Ettie’s Diary’ by local historian Kate O’Neill.

“This seems a good day to begin a diary...” so begins the 74-page account of the life of Henrietta McManamey, (Ettie) the 42-year-old wife of classics headmaster John McManamey, at their home and school - the Woodford Academy. This small exercise book contains an all too brief selection of Ettie’s life and thoughts before she died in August 1913.

‘Ettie’s Diary’ has an accessible and contemporary voice, her writing is honest and engaging and speaks of things that are timeless; the daily routine of housework, the joys of social interactions, of meeting friends and spending time with family, attending local entertainments, negotiating the complexities of social expectations and reporting on the ever-present debates of local and national politics. She speaks of local landmarks and locations that are still familiar to the reader 109 years on, and of local identities and residents, many only remembered by street names or park dedications. Her writings personalise the history of the community and draw individual connections with national and international events. This little diary gives a unique perspective of Woodford and The Blue Mountains society in the first decade of the 20th Century, before their lives were forever marked by the events of the Great War.

‘Ettie’s Diary’ has been published for the first time with assistance from Create NSW’s Grant Program, a devolved funding program administered by The Royal Australian Historical Society on behalf of the NSW Government.
