Event will continue in wet weather
Join us as we extend our celebration of International Women’s Day with a very exciting spoon carving workshop for women!

Learn the meditative joys of wooden spoon making. This workshop will provide a day of slowing down and reconnecting through focussed awareness as we journey from tree to spoon. Learn how to handcraft beautiful, functional wooden spoons in a calm supportive environment with the guidance of two skilled and talented teachers. Join Spoon Sisters, Jill and Georgina, in this 6 hour workshop where you will be shown tool safety and basic axe and knife techniques to carve locally foraged greenwood into your unique spoon.

What to Expect:

Absolutely no experience is required, just a can do attitude and a willingness to engage with the nature of the wood in the process of carving. The traditional craft of whittling has been around for thousands of years. Making your own functional object with natural materials is deeply satisfying as you discover a renewed appreciation for nature and your own creative capabilities.

About Your Tutors:

Jill has a bulging kitbag of practical creative skills including rustic stool and bench making. She has also built quite a lot of sheds in her time. In the past few years she fell into spoon whittling after walking 1400 kms and needing to keep the relationship of body, mind and nature alive and vibrant. She can often be found chasing the sound of a chainsaw, tracking down arborists and rescuing branches in order to give new life to trees. Jill has over 2 decades of experience helping people learn both in and outside schools. She enjoys seeing a spark come to life as people grow skills, and confidence in physical ability. For Jill, it’s exciting to facilitate the journey of discovery to what lies within, the mystery below the surface, both within the heart of the wood and the centre of our own being.

My interest with making things started whilst studying Industrial Design at the University of Canberra. From there I enrolled and studied fine furniture making under the late George Ingham at the Canberra School of Art. Over the past 20 years I have worked independently as a designer and maker of wooden objects in Canberra, Melbourne and the Blue Mountains. Alongside this I have been teaching woodwork classes privately, in schools and at University level. Spoon Carving is a recent passion for me that combines all these skills to make a beautiful object that can be used on a daily basis, whilst providing a place to practice mindfulness.
