The cockroach can survive being submerged under water for half an hour. It can live for a week without its head. It can survive a nuclear explosion because of its simple body structure and slow cell cycles. It has never been known to be discriminatory. These are all capabilities homosapiens can only dream to obtain. Why is the cockroach not celebrated? What holds value and why? Is it a dead rabbit in a Dutch painting? Why did the masters never paint the beautiful and humble cockroach?

Through my paintings I aim to capture the disregarded, mundane and macabre in their glory. I aim to celebrate the uncelebrated. By celebrating the cockroach in oils we can shift it’s grotesque nature and place a well-deserved value on this complex creature. Every creature has a story and in turn has value.
