Browns Swamp Himalayan Honeysuckle Eradication Day

Thu 22 Mar 2018
10.00am to 1.00pm
Browns Swamp Himalayan Honeysuckle Eradication Day - Come and lend a hand to protect our precious upland swamps!

Help Clarence-Dargan-Bell Landcare and project partners to eradicate this invasive weed from Browns and Kerma Crescent Swamp on Thursday 22 March 2018.

Browns and Kerma Crescent Swamps are part of the upland swamp system near Lithgow. These unique, endangered swamps provide important habitat for many species of plants and animals such as the threatened Blue Mountains Water Skink and Giant Dragonfly. If these swamps aren’t kept healthy, there is a real risk the species will decline in the future.

Weeds are a constant threat to the integrity of native bush. Himalayan Honeysuckle in particular is a woody weed that invades sensitive moist bushland; such as swamps; where it forms dense thickets and outcompetes native vegetation. It can completely transform bushland into a weedy forest which is not suitable habitat for many native animals.

The Working Day will build on some of the fantastic work that has already been done in the area to tackle the honeysuckle problem with the aim of supporting and re-invigorating the volunteer network on the Newnes Plateau – your help is needed urgently.

Lithgow Mayor, Stephen Lesslie, said, “Council is seeking enthusiastic local residents and community members to come along to the Swamp Care Working Day to help protect and enhance these unique swamp ecosystems and the threatened species that rely on them.“

There is good news for our swamps with the launch last year of the ‘Swamped by Threats’ project which provides 10 years of funding by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust Saving Our Species Partnership Grants Program and is supported by many project partners, including Lithgow City Council. This project will support many more projects and activities for community to be involved in to protect these priority swamps and the species that depend on them – so watch this space!

The working Day will be held on Thursday 22 March 2018 from 10.00am to 1pm. Meet at Browns Swamp near Zig Zag Railway. Long pants and long-sleeved top, enclosed footwear and hat are essential. A light lunch, tools, gloves, equipment and training will be provided on the day.

This event was made possible through support from Councils project partners Lithgow Oberon Landcare Association and Local Land Services through funding from the Australian Government. It is one of many Natural Resource Management Projects currently operating within the Local Government Area.
