Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping with Adam Kennedy

When:
Sun 11 Mar 2018
Time:
10.00am - 3.00pm
Cost:
$110.00 for the day
Details:
Beekeeping has exploded across backyards in the last few years, and for good reason: bees are endlessly fascinating creatures that can teach us about our ecosystem whilst providing essential pollination services as well as surplus honey if we are lucky. But starting out in backyard beekeeping can be an overwhelming experience for beginners.

In this one day workshop, students will gain an understanding of:

• Basic bee biology
• How to interact with the hive
• The difference between hive designs
• The benefits of “bee centred” beekeeping
• How to procure bees (splits/swarms/nucleus colonies etc)
• Good practice and hive management
• The legalities associated with keeping bees

We will also open a few different hives weather permitting.

We will taste some different types honey as well as sampling some fresh virgin honeycomb and mead.

Adam is a Permaculture educator, fermenter and beekeeper who lives in the Upper Mountains. He caught his first swarm in 2013 and was hooked...the hives kept on multiplying along with Adams’ deep interest for the magic world of bees. He has been incredibly blessed to be working and learning from natural beekeeper Tim Malfroy in his apiaries in the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains for the past five years.
