Update On Lennox Bridge Vandalism
A Council contractor is due to start removing graffiti, at a cost of about $16,000, in the next two weeks. But it was reported on Friday, 19 July that well-meaning residents had already attempted to clean the bridge.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “Council has engaged a specialist contractor to do this work. Sadly, due to the age of the bridge, we can’t use traditional graffiti removal options.
“I urge any well-meaning residents who have attempted to remove the graffiti to leave it to the specialists. The surface is so delicate that we must use materials that will not break down the sandstone.”
The contractor is due to commence works in the next two weeks to remove the graffiti and replace the special coating on the bridge surfaces.
At the beginning of July vandals attacked the site and severely impacted the bridge.
“The cost to the community is high, given the specialist treatment required,” Cr Greenhill said.
“Vandalism of this important heritage item is a crime, nothing else. I would encourage anyone who encounters the illegal defacement of public or private property to report it.”
Council is currently assessing security measures at the site, to determine if they can be enhanced.
To report graffiti on Council property call 4780 5000 or go online and complete a Customer Service Request. You can also report any incidence of graffiti by calling the NSW Graffiti Hotline on 1800 707 125 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
