Rare Pink Flannel Flowers Bringing Joy to a Fire Ravaged Landscape
The seeds of the pink flannel flower (Actinotus forsythia) lay dormant for years, and only flower in the very rare conditions when an unusually wet summer, follows a summer of bushfires.
The flowers can now be spotted in several locations which were severely burnt in the devastating fires of the 2019/2020 summer. These areas are still dominated by blackened stumps, but the flannel flowers are bringing a spot of colour with their tiny delicate pink flowers and white leaves. They look quite similar to daisies, with a cluster of tiny pink flowers surrounded by white furry leaves which measure around 1-3 cm across.
According to park rangers, controlling the crowds on the weekend, the Narrowneck area has not seen the pink flannel flower in bloom since 1957.
