Lithgow Celebrates NAIDOC

NAIDOC Week is a time of year when we especially celebrate our ongoing relationship with First Nation’s people of the region.

While Covid restrictions resulted in the cancellation of last year’s NAIDOC event in the Wolgan Valley, Mingaan Aboriginal Corporation is working hard to prepare for the 2021 NAIDOC event which will take place in October 2021.

Aunty Helen Riley, representing Mingaan, is passionate about sharing First Nation’s culture with the wider community. “NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, heritage and language. It’s an opportunity for all of us to gather and learn together,” she said.

NAIDOC’s theme this year is ‘Heal Country’ and Mingaan is doing just that with their ongoing work on sacred country at Maiyingu Marragu. Following the recent bushfires Mingaan have been working hard to repair and protect this important cultural site.

Mayor Ray Thompson is proud of Lithgow’s work in this space “As a Council we are very pleased to work with the First Nation’s Community. It’s an area that historically has not been done well and we really want to make sure that as an organisation we are working hard to improve”.

Lithgow City Council is committed to working closely with all sectors of our local community, and NAIDOC is a time of year when we especially celebrate our ongoing relationship with First Nation’s people of the region.  If you would like to be a part of that process, please contact our Community Development Team on 6354 9999.
