Focusing on DIY: Protect yourself and your family
The Hazardous waste… together we've got it sorted campaign, running to June 2021, is providing easy-to-understand and up-to-date information to residents, home renovators and home renovation businesses.
This month the focus is on home renovators who are starting a renovation, doing repairs or just redecorating a home. If your home was built before 1990, it's important to know the asbestos risks.
Asbestos is found in many parts of older homes, including:
- ceilings and internal walls
- flue and water pipes
- behind tiles
- flooring underlay
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: "We encourage you to identify where asbestos could exist before you start any work on your home - use a licenced asbestos assessor to protect your family's health."
Remember to never use high pressure water, compressed air or even a garden hose with a trigger attachment on asbestos roofs or other asbestos containing materials. Watch this SafeWork NSW video for more information: here.
This has been produced as part of the Council's Enforceable Undertaking with SafeWork NSW. The full undertaking is available at safeworknsw.
