Youth Week Cinema a Hit with Families
Nearly 160 people turned out with their blankets, cushions and deck chairs to enjoy the free screening of the BFG; the story of a girl, Sophie, who encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kind-hearted soul.
“The BFG fit nicely with this year’s Youth Week theme ‘Unity Through Diversity’ as it emphasized the importance of giving everyone a chance, to value difference and to not judge based on appearances,” said Kristy Lenon, Council’s Community Development Officer.
The event started at 5:00pm when the crowd were treated to movie treats, drinks and a fabulous BBQ delivered by Lithgow Lions Club. Approximately $175 was raised via donation for Lithgow Community Projects who support young people currently experiencing homelessness, or people experiencing domestic violence.
“Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in NSW. Each year we look forward to Youth Week as it provides a special time to say thanks for the valuable contribution young people make to our community,” said Kristy Lenon. “This event has been particularly well received by families who have praised it for being budget friendly and enjoyable for everyone. We hope to make this an annual event on Council’s calendar.”
The Youth Week Cinema was a free, family-friendly event (smoke, drug and alcohol free) proudly supported by Lithgow City Council and the Department of Family and Community Services.
