The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) has welcomed newly elected Mayors following a string of elections this month.

WSROC President Cr Stephen Bali said, “I would like to offer my congratulations to the newly elected Mayors of WSROC member councils Hawkesbury and Lithgow.

“Mayor of Hawkesbury, Cr Barry Calvert, has 19 years’ experience in local government and currently serves as Junior Vice President to the WSROC Board. In these roles Cr Calvert has shown outstanding service to the Hawkesbury community with a focus on human services, better transport infrastructure, and appropriately placed development,” he said.

“Mayor of Lithgow, Cr Ray Thompson, is currently serving his third term at Lithgow City Council and has demonstrated his passion for sports and active recreation during his time on council. Promoting healthy, active communities is a critically important issue for the WSROC region which suffers much higher rates of chronic illness and obesity than other areas of Sydney,” said Cr Bali.

“I would also like to thank outgoing Mayors Cr Mary Lyons-Buckett (Hawkesbury) and Cr Stephen Leslie (Lithgow) for their service. Both have been outstanding advocates for their communities over the last two years and will continue to do so as councillors. I look forward to working with Cr Mary Lyons-Buckett as she begins her new role as Deputy Mayor.

“In addition to these new appointments, both myself and Cr Mark Greenhill have been re-elected as Mayors of Blacktown and Blue Mountains City Councils respectively,” said Cr Bali.

“In his five years as Mayor, Cr Greenhill has fought passionately for the people of Blue Mountains on issues relating to Western Sydney Airport and the 2013 bushfires. I look forward to working with Cr Greenhill to deliver results for Western Sydney,” he said.

Not all WSROC councils held Mayoral elections in September.

Fairfield Mayor Cr Frank Carbone and Liverpool Mayor Cr Wendy Waller are popularly elected and will serve four-year terms to 2020.

The Mayoralty of Cumberland and City of Parramatta councils are not due for review until September 2019 following delays caused by the council amalgamation process.
