The Morrison Government is providing young job seekers in Western Sydney with the tools to kickstart a career in the disability and healthcare sectors through a new program delivered by locally based organisation Generation Australia.

Minister for Families and Social Services Paul Fletcher and Liberal Candidate for Macquarie Sarah Richards announced over $1.62 million in funding for the Generation: Demand-led Education to Employment project that will provide education and employment in the disability and aged care sectors for 150 unemployed young people living in Western Sydney.

“The disability and healthcare professions are one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia with workforces that are ripe with opportunity – creating promising career prospects for unemployed young people,” said Mr Fletcher.

“The Generation trial recognises the growing job market demand and aims to equip these young people with the relevant highly sought after skills and improve their chances of finding a job in these industries.”

“Our Liberal National Government is committed to giving anyone who wants to have a go, a fair go, and supporting our young people into finding their first job is a perfect example of having a go,” said Mr Fletcher.

“Many of the jobs within the disability and healthcare sectors are entry-level positions, with potential for career progression tied to additional training and experience,” Minister Fletcher said.

Participants will take part in intensive training boot camps with a targeted curriculum co-designed with education experts and potential employers in the sector to prepare participants to become high-performing care employees.

Sarah Richards welcomed the announcement for Western Sydney and said that Generation Australia will work with local employers to identify locations where there is high demand for employees.

“There is a great demand for workers in these industries here in the Hawkesbury and I am thrilled the Morrison Government has identified this need and is selecting the unemployed youth of the Blue Mountains to skill and equip them to take on this vitally important role,” Ms Richards said.

“The youth of this area have so much to offer and this is a great step up to afford them with the opportunity to learn skills that they will keep for a lifetime in a secure industry with a promising future.”

Mona Mourshed, CEO of Generation global, said the demand-led approach highlights the growing need for disability and healthcare workers and other high demand roles as opportunities for young job seekers to gain targeted training in these sectors.

“There is clear employer demand, and we are bringing Generation’s proven approach to the local context here. All participants will receive targeted and integrated training, peer support through their cohort, along with mentoring support throughout their journey through training and into the workforce,” Ms Mourshed said.

Generation: Demand-led Education to Employment project is supported under the Australia Government’s $96.1 million Try, Test and Learn Fund that is trialling innovative ways to improve the lives of Australians identified as being at risk of long-term welfare dependency.

Employers and young people aged 15 to 29 can learn more about getting involved in the Generation trial by emailing: Generation Australia
