Wolgan Road Landslip
In the last week a landslip occurred on the Wolgan Road, adjacent to the Wolgan Gap.
In the week prior to the landslip Lithgow was subject to heavy rainfall storm events. It is known that in such events certain roads will flood or become damaged and so these are closed by Council in advance.
But the geography in the Wolgan Gap can be prone to slippage with rocks and material washing onto the road. Such a landslip occurred on the evening of Tuesday 24th August 2021. Council work crews attended the site and worked for over four hours to assess the nature of the fallen material, remove it and restore access to the Wolgan Valley. As a result of prior mitigation works which were conducted post-bushfire in January 2020, the landslip was, on this occasion, minor in nature.
However, to improve the stability of the Wolgan Gap and the underlying road pavement Lithgow Council developed a suite of projects that when constructed could prevent future such landslips onto the road.
The projects include the construction of a significant retaining wall to eliminate ongoing erosion in isolated areas, and the improvements to the underlying road pavement in targeted locations. Even with these works completed, the Council will need to regularly inspect the location to ensure that any movement is acknowledged and addressed prior to large scale failure.
The Council will be making application for funding under the Australian Government 'Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program' and is confident the community in the valley is very supportive of this.
