Wild Dog and Foxes Targeted in Spring Campaign
It was this ongoing struggle to protect the beef cattle on the 259 ha property in North Richmond he manages that led him to seek the support of Greater Sydney Local Land Services.
Mr Shephard was one of almost 30 landholders to take part in a spring wild dog and fox control campaign recently completed throughout the Upper Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains area.
Biosecurity officer Jacob French said the program covered a large part of the area, including Kurrajong, Bilpin, the Upper Colo, Yarramundi, Wilberforce, Glenorie, Cattai, Winmalee and more.
“With the program about to come to an end, we are certainly seeing early signs of success,” he said.
Mr Shephard said within a week of starting the program, four foxes had been removed from his property.
“There are people in the community who believe foxes should be left alone,” he said. “But they are not native to this country and if you have seen what they do, the brutality of their attacks, often on calving heifers, you would realise how important it is to stop them.”
He said it wasn’t just about protecting livestock, but native animals as well.
“Foxes in particular carry a range of diseases that can affect domestic and native animals, they spread mange, weeds and have a massive impact on our environment.”
Mr French said the success of such programs was down to landholder involvement.
“Our experience has shown us that coordinated programs involving multiple landholders in the same area has the highest impact,” he said.
Mr Shephard urged more landholders in the region to do their bit.
“Pest animal control is everyone’s program, whether you are directly impacted or not,” he said.
“Times are tough enough with the drought, everyone should be doing what they can to support our farmers.”
The current campaign will wrapped up on 31 October.
Domestic pet owners are reminded to ensure all animals are restrained during this time.
