It’s steaming hot outside; school holidays are almost in full swing and it’s the beginning of the festive season. How about retreating to a cool, dark theatre to indulge yourself in some of the most iconic movies to come out of the 80s? Or enrolling the kids in some of the country’s best renowned theatre and dance workshops for young people?

80’s Film Festival

11 – 18 January 2020
11am & 2pm for the first week, then showings from 11am – 6pm on Saturday 18 January

How about retreating to a cool, dark theatre to indulge yourself in some of the most iconic movies to come out of the 80s?  Join us at The Joan in Penrith from 11 – 18 January when we bring you our 80s Film Festival: Festive Season Recovery Edition.

There will be two movie showings a day – expect to see favourites like Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Risky Business, Flashdance and more from 11am and 2pm daily throughout the week with one last hurrah on Saturday 18 January – the final day of the film festival that showcases all 5 movies from 11am, with the last showing at 6pm. Tickets are $12 for a single film, or $50 for the whole week.

Whether you opt to don shoulder pads and bubble skirts, oversized tees or high waisted jeans – your choice. But be sure to bring the kids (ratings permitting), lower your expectations and prepare for some chilled summer fun out of the heat. Enjoy a day or two off from the worries of the world and come back to the ‘80s!

Q Theatre & ATYP Theatre Workshops

Every school holidays ATYP carefully designs a program of fun drama workshops for kids aged 4 – 18. We work with industry trained actors, directors, filmmakers and writers who are your tutors for our week long drama workshops.

Our acting classes can include character development, self-devised work, comedy, drama, movement, audition intensives, voice and accents and much more. The program can also cover short film making, online presentation for digital platforms, storytelling technique, stagecraft and for our littlest participants amazing imagination stretching.

ATYP creates school holiday drama workshops aimed to encourage and engage young people from Kindergarten to Year 12. Kids will make new friends, learn about performing, gain confidence and most importantly have a ton of fun in a safe and inspiring environment.

Musical Theatre, ages 12-15 (years 7-9)

Spend the week investigating the brilliant world of Broadway and its stars. Learn both singing and acting techniques, and using current musical hits create your own story to weave these songs into. Get inspired by the likes of Tim Minchin, Lin-Manuel Miranda and many more. At the end of the week bring or your newly acquired skills together for a rip roaring showing sure to earn a standing ovation!

This January, take your performance skills to the next level with ATYP. Learn about the elements of drama including script analysis, establishing subtext, clarifying intention, sharing focus and building tension. Examine short scenes and monologues to create truthful 3-dimensional characters work on articulation and voice projection and how to hold an audience’s attention. Throughout the week you will work with an industry professional on different scenes and monologues and will get the chance to share your work with family and friends at the end of the week.

Join in the fun at Sydney Dance Company this Summer and develop skills in a range of dance styles. The dance workshops run over two days and provide a specialised, exciting and focused environment for young people to improve their dance technique and learn new routines under the direction of professional teachers and choreographers.

Two workshop series by Sydney Dance Company are confirmed at The Joan for:
