Work to improve road access to the new Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area will begin next week.

The roadworks will see Glowworm Tunnel Road closed on weekdays while construction is underway.

The road closure means visitors will be unable to access Glow Worm Tunnel and areas of the Gardens of Stone SCA north of the Bungleboori Picnic Area from Monday 25 November.

During the weekday closure visitors will also be unable to access Deep Pass camping area and Waratah Ridge canyons and climbing sites in Wollemi National Park and the Newnes camping area.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) expect the roadworks will be completed in approximately three weeks.

The roadworks are part of NPWS’s work to construct Bungleboori Picnic Area, which will become the main meeting point in the Gardens of Stone SCA and is part of a major program to develop visitor facilities and improve access across the new State Conservation Area. The program includes construction of walking tracks, lookouts, camping areas and major road upgrades.

Visitors are reminded to check NPWS alerts before travelling to any NSW national park for the latest information and to help plan trips in advance.

NPWS Blue Mountains Branch Director David Crust noted the following "Safe visitor access on Glowworm Tunnel Road isn’t possible during the upcoming roadworks.

That is why this work is being carried out on weekdays, so we can re-open access to areas including Glow Worm Tunnel and the Gardens of Stone SCA from 5pm Friday and across each weekend.

The road will be closed again after each weekend from 7am Monday to allow works to be completed.

Visitors should refer to the NPWS alerts website page for details of what is accessible during the closure."
