VET Teacher Judged the State’s Best at the 2020 NSW Training Awards
Member of the Legislative Council and Blue Mountains resident Shayne Mallard MP congratulated Megan on receiving the prestigious award saying she was an inspiration to anyone thinking of pursuing a fulfilling and rewarding career through vocational education and training (VET).
“In 2015, Megan realigned the hospitality program at Winmalee High School to create the innovative @thecaffeinelab, a student-led school café,” Mr Mallard said.
“In one-year, hospitality enrolments grew from 41 to 149 students. The following year eight hospitality classes were offered with students attaining 1st and 4th in the State for their HSC Hospitality Method.”
Mr Mallard said the @thecaffeinelab is a valued part of the school’s culture which embraces a diverse range of learners.
“Local industry is impressed by the students’ vast skill set resulting in many student employment opportunities,” Mr Mallard said.
“Megan utilises peer mentorship and personal empowerment to inspire her students to reach their full potential. She modifies the certificate’s academic requirements to suit individual learning needs so all students reach 100 per cent completion.”
Megan said she now consults on similar programs in NSW schools.
“It’s my mission to create a safe and meaningful work environment where every student can develop confidence, feel empowered and achieve success,” she said.
Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the students, educators and training providers represented at the NSW Training awards were living proof that NSW’s VET system offered a first-class choice for a rewarding career and lifestyle.
“I congratulate Megan on being named NSW VET Trainer/Teacher of the Year and wish her the best when she represents NSW at the Australian Training Awards in November,” Mr Lee said.
The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by the NSW Department of Education in recognition of outstanding achievements in VET.
The VET Trainer/Teacher of the Year Award was presented this year thanks to a partnership with NSW Department of Education.
