Urinetown Overflows with Local Talent

Lovers of musical theatre will not be disappointed with Urinetown, a clever, witty, environmentally friendly, multi-award winning show presented by Blue Mountains Musical Society. Without giving too much away, Urinetown is a magical place...or is it?

Urinetown is a satirical musical which thoroughly entertains, yet also makes you stop and think about the freedom we have within our society as well as the luxury of public facilities.

Hats off to musical director Matt Lovelace and choreographer Bec Blackwell for delivering an outstanding ensemble cast which steals the show. Super packed with talent, every ensemble member is strong in character, perfectly harmonised and mesmerising to watch.

All of the leads and minor principals are exceptionally well cast.

Benjamin Roorda as hero Bobby Strong is full of charm, charisma and comic timing, drawing the audience into the show. He is well partnered with the strong vocal talents of Hayley Cascarino, Hope Cladwell, his love interest who is also the daughter of the show’s primary villain Caldwell B. Cladwell, played by Hayley’s real-life father David Cascarino.

Marlena Thomson’s character is the innocent and inquisitive Little Sally who is simply delightful in her role and an audience favourite.

Riley Glen is very commanding as Mr McQueen, Cladwell’s assistant at Urine Good Company or U.G.C. for short.

The show is aptly narrated by law enforcement Officer Lockstock played by the talented Jessica Lovelace.

Although this 2001 musical is relatively unfamiliar to Australian audiences, it is extremely refreshing to be entertained by a show where you have no idea what will happen next. No doubt you will find yourself toe-tapping away in your seats to the incredibly catchy “Run, Freedom, Run!” in Act 2 which will stay with you for weeks to come. In fact, all musical numbers seem to be clever parodies of famous Broadway shows, and part of the fun is guessing the musical.

Director Naomi Livingston has excelled in bringing Urinetown to the Blue Mountains stage. This show is clearly a testament to her ability for fostering a super tight creative production team and cast who love what they do. This show generates an abundance of fun, energy and enthusiasm which is contagious and has to be experienced by audiences of all ages.

Blue Mountains Musical Society has certainly taken a risk stepping outside the comfort zone of well-known productions to present a show with a questionable title. However, this is an unexpectedly superb, melodramatic musical that everyone who loves quality live entertainment should see ... with the exception of our local council who may be enticed to adopt new fee-generating environmental policy ideas for local residents after seeing the show.

If you get the opportunity, don’t miss this amazing show now playing in Springwood at Blue Mountains Theatre.
