Upgrades deliver vibrant meeting place for Katoomba town centre
The upgrades, which were jointly funded by the Australian Government and Blue Mountains City Council include:
- Improved accessibility, lighting and safety features to ensure a more comfortable experience for all users.
- Newly designed communal areas to provide versatile spaces for public gatherings, events, and community activities.
- Sustainable design elements, including renewed landscaping, drainage and improved water capture and storage.
- A new Visitor Information Centre to provide a coordinated, high-quality visitor experience within the town centre.
The revitalised precinct will also showcase local art and culture, with a newly fitted-out artist residency space set to open later this year.
A new feature sculpture, by Blue Mountains artist Clara Hali, has also been installed in the precinct. It joins works by other local artists which were installed earlier in the revitalisation project.
Blue Mountains City Council CEO, Rosemary Dillon said: “The highly anticipated revitalisation project has transformed this important community facility into a vibrant and inclusive community meeting place for cultural expression, social interaction, and economic development.
“Katoomba is a special place that welcomes millions of visitors each year and the completion of this project is the beginning of many exciting improvements for the town centre, that Council has committed to working with the community on over the coming years.”
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, said the changes would help breath life back into this part of Katoomba.
“The improved accessibility, sustainable design, and the public artwork by Clara Hali, reflect the community’s values while delivering practical improvements for the town centre,” Ms Templeman said.
The final touches are being made ahead of the precinct being officially opened on Saturday 28 September as part of the inaugural Blue Mountains Sustainability Festival, when the area is transformed into a hub of eco-friendly activities showcasing local businesses, community groups and inspiring speakers.
