Lithgow City Council is to undertake major upgrade works involving three road bridges in the Capertee Valley.

Lithgow Mayor, Maree Statham said “These exciting projects will greatly improve the resilience of road access to our most remote, but precious localities. This council recognises the need for bespoke transport solutions to ensure the road network is reliable in the face of natural disasters and changing transport needs. This project will support local tourism, business and residential growth and emergency services.”

One of the bridges, at Coco Creek, was proving difficult to re-direct traffic around and residents were facing the frustration and challenge of long commutes via Rylstone.

Fortunately, public consultation about the proposals has resulted in the generous offer from landowners for a single-lane access for light vehicles across their land.

In the vicinity of the Coco Creek bridge site the council has now investigated the feasibility of constructing this detour route around the work site with geotechnical studies, environmental assessments and traffic flow analyses undertaken. As a result, the council can has confirmed that a temporary bridge and access will now be constructed at this site also.

While the work will not be able to cater for large vehicles, it will eliminate extensive detours for residents, tourists and emergency vehicles

Mayor Maree Statham said, “I thank the property owners who have facilitated this outcome for the residents of the Capertee Valley. It is just another example of the community and this Lithgow Council working together to carry the city into the future.”

” I also acknowledge the NSW Government for funding these projects under their Fixing Country Bridges program.”
