UBUNTU: The African Children’s Choir High School Graduate Tour

Since 2013 concerts in the Blue Mountains by children and young adults from this organisation have raised tens of thousands of dollars to educate extremely poor children from primary school to university in Uganda and Kenya.

Its leader in Uganda, Abraham Kiyingi, is excited about spending time with host families from Springwood High School and giving inspiring, high-energy concerts in late May and early June.

“We from Africa have it hot so visiting the Blue Mountains allows us to experience winter,” he said. “However we feel the cold, it’s the warm hospitality, the smiles and the hugs of the people of the Blue Mountains that keep us coming back.”

The African Children’s Choir began bringing children from slums and remote villages on global tours in 1984 — singing, drumming and dancing in huge stadiums and school and church halls. Its choirs have performed for Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela and shared the stage with stars like Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox and U2. In Australia they have sung with Jonathon Welch from the Choir of Hard Knocks, opera singer Deborah Cheetham and Kate Miller-Heidke.

Benefits from these tours flow both ways: the children are inspired to aim for possibilities beyond the daily struggle to survive, and audiences are inspired by the talent, energy, happiness and hope of performers who have grown up in extreme poverty.

Ubuntu — an indigenous South African word that expresses the connection between all human beings — takes this cultural exchange to a new level.

High school graduates from Uganda and Kenya are spending their gap year performing in Australia. These 18- to 20-year-olds are poised to fulfil their potential and make a difference in Africa. As they prepare to enter university, they are excited to share with Australia how their dreams are becoming a reality through the Ubuntu tour.

Emmanuel Mutsinzi, from a slum in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, said: “Making music brings many things to life. It heals, speaks to the broken-hearted and motivates people even when you least expect it to.”
