Top Authors to Visit the Mountains to Deliver Varuna Writing Workshops
“We are so lucky to live in such a vibrant creative community, with many established and emerging writers calling the mountains home. The writing workshops we ran during the Varuna & Sydney Writers’ Festival in April booked out so quickly, so it has become a priority to offer more, high calibre writing workshops throughout the year,” said Amy Sambrooke, Creative Director Varuna.
The next workshop in Varuna’s program is on Saturday 8 September in Lithgow’s Gang Gang Gallery, bringing Varuna Alumna Madeline Oliver’s workshop The Unbelievable Truth to the other side of the Blue Mountains.
“This is the first time we are expanding our reach regionally and we are really excited to be going to Lithgow! Gang Gang Gallery is a vibrant creative space which we think our workshop participants will really enjoy as a backdrop for their creative inspiration.”
The workshop offers support to kick-start participants’ memoir or creative non-fiction writing, with tools to help identify what you really want to say, strategies to overcome blocks and a clear, simple plan for the future. Madeline Oliver is a published author and regularly facilitates writing workshops in Sydney.
On Saturday 6 October Miles Franklin Award winner, Michelle De Kretser, will come to Varuna to share her expertise in The Art of the Sentence. This workshop will suit emerging writers who want to take their prose to the next level. Participants will receive feedback from Michelle and work in small groups, all with a focus on sentences.
“This is a rare opportunity learn from one of Australia’s finest writers, Michelle de Kretser. This will undoubtedly sell out fast”.
For an in-depth look at Life Writing, during November, author Patti Miller will lead a series of workshops focussing on creating the lived experience on the page. The course offers ways to access memories and helps participants find their writing voice. The workshop series will be held at Katoomba’s historic Carrington Hotel and at Varuna. Patti Miller began Life Stories Workshops at Varuna in 1991 and is Australia's best-known memoir teacher, offering the Faber Academy course in Sydney and London and memoir courses around Australia and in Paris. More than 45 of her writers have been commercially published. Patti Miller is the author of eight books.
