The Blue Mountains Edible Garden Trail unfolds once more in 2024, welcoming visitors to explore sustainable practices and celebrate the bounty of edible gardens.

The Trail is on the weekend of March 2-3, 2024. Among the participating sites is The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains, led by local gardener and permaculture advocate, Amanda Argent.

This annual event weaves a thread of environmental awareness across the diverse landscapes of the Mountains, connecting communities from Little Hartley to Lapstone. Initiated by sustainability champion Susanne Rix, the Trail serves as a platform for showcasing alternative approaches to cultivating vibrant landscapes.

Susanne observed a widespread appreciation for gardening amongst locals, but also noticed a dependence on chemical solutions with unintended consequences. "Sadly, many widely-used poisons kill not only the pests, but frogs, bees, good bugs and all manner of vital nutrients in the soil.” she explains on the Edible Garden website.

Drawing inspiration from permaculture principles, Susanne envisioned gardens that flourish in harmony with nature. Techniques like companion planting, water conservation, and fostering natural predators contribute to creating visually appealing and ecologically sound spaces.

Since its launch in 2018, the Trail has blossomed into an Australia-wide phenomenon, with the Blue Mountains event holding a cherished place in the local calendar. Organised by the Blue Mountains Food Co-op, 2024 welcomes over 40 gardens eager to share their unique approaches.

The Springwood region particularly embraces the edible challenge, offering eight diverse garden experiences this year. While areas across the Mountains navigate challenges like soil and climate, Springwood is recognised for its favourable conditions for nurturing edible delights, as coordinator Jacqueline Forster acknowledges.  ‘It has been said that Springwood possesses the perfect climate for growing food. Not too cold and not too hot’, said Jacqueline.

Jacqueline emphasises that flexibility, creativity, and vision are key ingredients for a thriving edible garden. These values resonate with Amanda Argent's philosophy at Urban Farmer Blue Mountains, where fostering a community-centred space extends beyond the Trail dates.

"If I had to have a catchphrase it would be 'Building and Connecting Community,'" Amanda shares, her voice conveying a quiet dedication. “That’s who I am, deep within my heart space.”

So, for those seeking to discover alternative gardening practices and connect with like-minded individuals, the Edible Garden Trail offers a unique opportunity. Delve into the serene landscapes of the Blue Mountains and uncover the flourishing spirit of sustainability, nurtured by local champions like Amanda and Susanne.
