The Little Mermaid Surfaces to The Blue Mountains
Directing this 'fintastic' show for the society is John Forbes. As a performing arts teacher at Blue Mountains Grammar School, John is not new to the role of directing, but having previously undertaken the role for shows such as 'Beauty and the Beast Jr' and 'Sleeping Beauty Kids' with New & Used Productions this is John's first directing role with the Blue Mountains Musical Society and having been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, John has captured the true beauty of the story, re-telling the tale in a way only live theatre can offer.
John started his journey with The Blue Mountains Musical Society as a cast member of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in 2015 and he continued to perform with the group in roles such as ‘Big Deal’ in ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Simeon’ in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. So what can audiences expect from The Little Mermaid? Forbes says "Everything they love about the film, brought to life by a dynamic cast, with a few welcome surprises along the way". If you liked the movie you are sure to like the musical, with more songs to have you humming for days and more insight into each character, seeing the musical is a must for any Disney fan.
Leading up to the show, some of the performers have made appearances at local primary schools, performing songs from the show including ‘Part of your World’, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’, ‘Les Poisson’ and the crowd favourite ‘Under the Sea’. Performing for seven schools from Orchard Hills to Katoomba, the group received an energetic welcome from each of their audiences, excited to hear the songs they know so well performed live. The performances were included not only for entertainment but as part of a well rounded education, from having their students observe performance skills and offering an end of term treat to the children, to being involved in a Q & A session about the production and the experiences of the performers.
The Little Mermaid offers a great opportunity to introduce children to musical theatre, with the show encouraging people to fight for their dreams even when faced with opposition, there are some great lessons within the story that even the youngest of minds can latch on to. With special appearances by some of the characters after each matinee performance, the afternoon sessions on the Saturdays and Sundays will be the family favourites for the production run.
