A Shorten Labor Government will provide $1 million for a fully inclusive playground for the Blue Mountains and $10,000 for sensory play equipment at Springwood Public School.

Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, said the package of funding was a huge win for the Blue Mountains.

“There was huge support from the community when I joined with Springwood mum, Jane Renneberg-Bles, in calling for an all abilities playground in the Mountains,” she said. “It is just one of the reasons I’m so proud to represent this community.

“I’d like to thank each and every member of our community for their support and for getting behind the campaign to help secure this $1million funding commitment for a playground that caters for kids of all abilities and their families and friends.

“A Shorten Labor Government will work with Blue Mountains City Council to ensure this is built, and determine where, but not before we hear exactly what the community wants. We have to get this right. And BMCC has shown a strong commitment to enhancing inclusion in is parks and playgrounds.

“Everyone in our community from mums and dads, to nurses, carers, teachers, builders, and of course, kids, deserves to have their say on what our new playground should include – there will be a full community consultation process.”

In addition, a Shorten Labor Government will provide $10,000 for sensory play equipment at Springwood Public School.

“Springwood Public School has roughly 400 students, including three support unit classes. Their fantastic P&C has been a driving force behind providing them with the first stage of their own purpose built, sensory play equipment.

“Through their fundraising efforts, they were able to fund the construction of a purpose-built frame, designed to suspend sensory play equipment, but needed a funding boost to complete the job.

“This $10,000 will allow them to install the therapy equipment as well as purchasing and installing extra sensory play equipment.”

Ms Renneberg-Bles, welcomed both announcements.

“We are so grateful to Susan for her determination to make this happen and the wider community for signing all those petitions.

“You have no idea how much of a dream-come-true a fully inclusive playground is for so many Blue Mountains families.

“This is going to mean the world to our community and for all the future generations to come.

“It’s wonderful to know you are listened to and that when the community comes together for such an important cause – big and wonderful things can happen.

“The $10,000 for Springwood Public School means we will be able to complete the job our P&C started.  Sensory play is such an important part of development and can really help students remain calm and self-regulate so they can achieve their best educational outcomes."

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said, “This is fantastic news."

“The real beneficiaries will be our children.

“Council will work closely with Susan Templeman on issues like location.

“We will use designers who are expert in the field.

“I would like to thank Susan for caring about our children and making this wonderful announcement happen.”

Ms Templeman said she looked forward to working with the community and Blue Mountains City Council, to deliver the playground.

“I am proud of our community for starting such an important conversation and thankful for their support in fighting for this playground."

“I am excited for the next steps, and look forward to working with the community on this amazing infrastructure for the Mountains."
