Blue Mountains City Council is continuing its Take the Lead campaign, reminding dog owners to keep their pets on a leash, unless in designated off-leash areas, and to properly dispose of the dog’s waste.

With new signage in over 48 public spaces, Take the Lead is designed to improve compliance with the Companion Animals Act, which outlines the duties and responsibilities of owners of companion animals.

Blue Mountains City Council Mayor Mark Greenhill said the campaign's core objective is to ensure every member of the community – including our four-legged friends – can enjoy our outdoor spaces in a safe and inclusive way.

"The majority of dog owners in our community are responsible and comply with leash regulations,” Cr Greenhill said. “Take the Lead builds on this and will help safeguard the wellbeing of our community, including our beloved animal companions.

“With more than 37,000 dogs on our Animal Register, a collective effort is needed to promote safety, respect, and adherence to regulations.

“Behaviours such as unrestrained dogs in public, and failure to dispose of dog waste can be dangerous, unsafe and unhygienic. Recent incidents including dog fights and attacks, underscore the need for responsible ownership practices to mitigate potential dangers.

Take the Lead also addresses the misconception that some dogs pose no threat because they are “friendly” or “good”.

"Often well-meaning dog owners allow their dogs off-leash because they think their dog is ‘friendly, small or harmless’," Cr Greenhill said. "However, an off-leash dog – no matter its temperament – can cause significant anxiety for some people and some dogs, so compliance is in everybody’s best interest. Dogs can also be unpredictable.

“Council has invested in 14 off-leash areas, and we encourage the community to use these.”

In addition to the education campaign, Take the Lead will see Council continue its patrols of parks, sporting grounds, open spaces, and off-leash areas.

“Penalty notices can be issued, but we hope the motivating factor for dog owners will be consideration of the safety of others and an improved community experience, and also an improved experience for their dog,” Cr Greenhill said.
