Blue Mountains City Council will hold the inaugural Planetary Health Day on Saturday 24 February, from 9am to 3pm, at the Planetary Health Precinct and Parklands, Katoomba.

This free community day offers residents and visitors an opportunity to learn ways to save money, reduce disaster risk, and restore the health of our community and planet. It is also the launch of the water tank community bulk buy for discounted water tanks.

Mayor, Councillor Mark Greenhill, said, “We encourage everyone to take a Planetary Health Day on Saturday 24 February. We know life can be overwhelming sometimes and this event is an antidote to that. Come along and learn more about taking care of our planet and ourselves and have fun while you do it.

“The day will be a one-stop shop to help you tick off all those sustainability and disaster risk reduction goals on your to-do list.”

Official proceedings will commence at 10am with Welcome to Country from Dharug man, Chris Tobin, and proud Gundungarra woman, Kelsie King, followed by a performance from Wagana Dancers. Mayor, Councillor Mark Greenhill, will then officially open the event.

A series of workshops will be held throughout the day, including:

  • Hempcrete for fire-resistant building
  • An overview of the traditional culture of the Dharug people with Chris Tobin
  • Everyone Can Draw: collaborative drawing workshop
  • Michael Mobbs: Sustainable Houses and Cool Seats
  • Plant-based cheese making demonstration and tasting
  • Set-up your own Drip Irrigation
  • Kids' clothes and toy swap

In addition to the workshops the event features 24 stallholders including local produce ‘crop ‘n swap’, local seeds and seedlings, eat weeds with Marnee Fox and Diego Bonetto, the South Katoomba RFS fire truck, and WIRES. Attendees can learn to make a Boomerang Bag and talk with an everyday electric car driver to find out what it’s like to own an EV.

The day will also feature talks, an exhibition, entertainment, delicious plant-based food, and a variety of activities the whole family will enjoy. The event will proceed no matter the weather.

This event is part of a Bioregional Collaboration for Planetary Health and is supported by the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (DRRF). The DRRF is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments.
