Blue Mountains Community Co-op was the winner of the Sustainability Award at the 2023 Local Business Awards.
Community owned not-for-profit Blue Mountains Food Co-op was recognised for its commitment to sustainability at the 2023 Local Business Awards, held on 15 November at Fairmont Resort, Leura.

Blue Mountains Food Co-op was the winner of Blue Mountains City Council’s Sustainability Award, which recognises the achievements of local businesses that practise and promote sustainability to contribute to a diverse, robust and environmentally-friendly local economy.

Blue Mountains Food Co-op has been operating in the Blue Mountains for more than 40 years.

The co-operative demonstrated long-term commitment to sustainable practices in its operations, as well as its dedication to making local sustainable products available to the community.

Blue Mountains City Council is a Gold Sponsor of the Blue Mountains Local Business Awards, and is sponsor of the Sustainability Award, building upon Council’s commitment of achieving an economically sustainable eco-city.

Blue Mountains City Council Mayor Mark Greenhill, who gave the opening address at the awards, said: “Blue Mountains Food Co-op demonstrated that sustainable values are at the core of their business.

“They have grown considerably over the years and now employ more than 20 people, assisted by volunteers, which is a clear indication that these values are shared by the community.

“I’d like to congratulate all the entrants and winners on their success. Local businesses are at the heart of the Blue Mountains economy and community. The hard work, ingenuity, resilience, and creativity of their owners and employees make our towns and villages desirable places to visit, work and live.”

Blue MOuntains City Council CEO Rosemary Dillion said, “I commend the Blue Mountains Food Co-op for demonstrating leadership when it comes to sustainable practices, which are essential for Council’s goal of transitioning to a Circular Economy.

“A healthy environment, economy and community depends on everyone doing their part and Council celebrates businesses that champion these values.”
