Parents and carers of young children are invited to two special ‘Speechie Library Talks' this November, hosted at Katoomba and Springwood Libraries.

The free sessions are designed for parents and carers of children aged 0–5 years and their children, offering practical tips on how to support speech and language development through everyday reading and play.

Presented in partnership with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the talks will be led by local speech pathologist Andrew Pople.

“Speech, language and communication are so everyday that we often don’t stop and think about how they develop,” Mr Pople said.

“The Speechie Library Talks are designed to help parents and carers build their understanding and support them building their child’s language and literacy development.”

Mayor Mark Greenhill said events like these help parents in our community to guide their children's development.

"We know that early language experiences support lifelong learning, confidence and literacy and these talks provide parents with the tools and knowledge to nurture early speech and language skills,” Cr Greenhill said.

"It’s wonderful to see our libraries partnering with local professionals to make these valuable resources accessible to all families.”

Each ‘Speechie Library Talk’ will include a reading from one of Speech Pathology Australia’s 2025 Book of the Year winners, alongside practical guidance on how to make storytime a powerful tool for language growth.

Blue Mountains Libraries will also showcase a curated collection of books recommended by speech pathologists, helping families continue to learn and explore at home.

Families can choose from two sessions:

  • 11am Friday 28 November – Springwood Library (part of the 0–5 years programs)
  • 11am Saturday 29 November – Katoomba Library.
