Stand up for NAIDOC Week 2022!
NAIDOC Week is held every July across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Blue Mountains City Council is showing support by inviting the community to a flag raising and smoking ceremony at 10am, Monday 4 July at Carrington Place.
“The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – is a call for everyone to show support for our First Nations community,” Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill said.
“It’s not difficult to find out about First Nations history, to learn some First Nations language, or re-share a post from a First Nations perspective that may help to enlighten others.
“I urge all of our Blue Mountains community to support NAIDOC Week by finding ways to acknowledge our Traditional Owners, or you can join us at the NAIDOC Week event. I look forward to see you there.”
Other events during NAIDOC Week include:
- Blue Mountains City Cultural Centre’s NAIDOC Community Day 2022 on Saturday, 2 July, 10am to 6pm. Get more information at here
- Exhibitions by two local art groups at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre from 25 June to 7 August. Get more information at here
- Garguree Swampcare Opening of the Yarning Circle Sunday 3 July 9:30am to 12pm. Register your interest by emailing . Please note: Bookings are limited.
Council will re-endorse its 2021 Statement of Recognition and Commitment at the 28 June 2022 Council Meeting. Go to here for more information.
“By re-endorsing the Statement of Recognition and Commitment, Council is honouring the past and responding to the future in an honest and meaningful way,” Mayor Greenhill said.
“We recognise the past and ongoing injustices and discrimination experienced by the Dharug and Gundungurra people and we commit to working with Traditional Owners and the broader First Nations community, to take tangible steps to address these injustices in order to embrace a future together.”
