Springwood to Lithgow Rail Corridor Modifications
The new trains will operate along the entire Blue Mountains Line to Lithgow and will provide a new level of comfort and convenience for intercity customers. Modifications are needed along the rail corridor from west of Springwood Station to Lithgow Station to accommodate the new trains.
In August 2017, the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the Springwood to Lithgow Rail Corridor Modifications Project was publicly displayed and feedback invited. Transport for NSW would like to thank the community for their feedback, which has been considered as part of the planning approval process. The project has now been determined and feedback received has been responded to in a Determination Report which is now available to view at transport.nsw.gov.au
Construction of the Springwood to Lithgow Rail Corridor Modifications Project is expected to start in 2018. The project team will keep the community up to date with regular notifications and updates on the Transport for NSW website.Below is a summary of key areas of feedback received during the public display of the REF. Concern for potential travel disruptions:
- The majority of works will be undertaken during scheduled Sydney Trains trackwork periods.
- Up to 10 pre-existing Sydney Trains trackwork periods will be utilised over the two-year construction period, typically including shutdowns of 48 hours over a weekend period.
- Replacement bus services would be provided at affected stations during any scheduled trackwork periods utilised by the Project.
Justification for the Project:
- The current intercity fleet trains are some of the oldest trains in the electric fleet and are approaching the end of their lifetime.
- The New Intercity Fleet will replace ageing rolling stock and address increasing patronage demand on routes to the Central Coast, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and the South Coast.
Features of the New Intercity Fleet particularly seating configuration, comfort of seats and the provision for vestibules:
- The New Intercity Fleet is being designed with the comfort of the customer in mind. Customer research was conducted in 2015 to help identify preferred seating arrangements and key cabin features.
- Seat backs will be fixed and the majority of seats will not be directly facing other passengers.
- The New Intercity Fleet is being designed to meet public transport accessibility requirements and will not have vestibules for this reason.
- The New Intercity Fleet will have modern air conditioning to ensure a regulated temperature in all parts of the train.
Safety and security concerns:
- The safety of customers and staff is our number one priority. The New Intercity Fleet will feature new and improved on-board technology that improves safety, such as CCTV cameras, customer help points, alarms, auto selective door operation (to ensure that doors open only when adjacent to the platform), emergency door release, fire detection technology, fire resistant materials and access to real time information.
Get the facts about the New Intercity Fleet
- Transport for NSW worked with Australian and overseas train manufacturers to identify the most suitable train design. The tender evaluation selected an international consortium as the preferred supplier - all four tenderers proposed international design, manufacture and delivery.
- The successful RailConnect consortium, which includes the Australian company, UGL Rail, offered the best value for money. UGL Rail will be responsible for the maintenance of the fleet for the first 15 years of the trains operation.
- Designing, building and fitting out the New Intercity Fleet overseas represents a saving of around 25 per cent. The NSW Government is committed to value for money and these savings will be invested in other infrastructure and services.
- The current intercity fleet are some of the oldest trains in the electric fleet and are approaching the end of their lifetime.
- The new trains are being built to our specifications and will run all the way to Lithgow.
- Manufacturing of the new trains is now under way.
Ten Tunnels Deviation – public display of planning documents
Plans for minor civil work to widen the Ten Tunnels Deviation (between Newnes Junction Station and Lithgow Station) to accommodate the New Intercity Fleet are currently being finalised and will be subject to a separate environmental impact assessment. These planning documents are expected to be available to the community for comment in early 2018 and Transport for NSW will hold community information sessions in Mount Victoria and Lithgow during the public display period. We will let the community know in advance of this taking place.
