Serious Train Disruptions Ahead for Springwood to Lithgow Rail Corridor

Platform and line modifications will be required between Springwood and Lithgow railway stations.
Lithgow Council seeks briefing session from Transport NSW on Ten Tunnels Deviation and construction works at Mt Victoria.

Lithgow Council has written to the Secretary for Transport NSW seeking an urgent briefing on work proposed for the Springwood to Lithgow Rail Corridor modifications and the Ten Tunnels Deviation.

The Council is concerned that:

  • Up to 70 days in the next 12 months will be lost to electric train services to Lithgow as a result of platform and line modifications;
  • The possibility that a greater number of days will be lost when construction on the Ten Tunnels Deviation commences;
  • That the Ten Tunnels Deviation works may never occur because of a yet to be commenced separate approval process and potential cost blowouts that have plagued other projects and;
  • That Rail transport hub activities currently in Lithgow will be transitioned to a Bus Hub in Mount Victoria which is undergoing significant construction works currently.

“Council considered this matter at its March and October 2017 meetings and wrote to the Secretary of Transport on the 1 November 2017 seeking the urgent briefing,” said Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

“We have recently received different messages from Transport NSW and the Deputy Premier regarding the consultative process employed by the NSW Government on the Regional Rail facility, and it is important that we understand fully the NSW Government’s intentions for the Lithgow Community and the potential impacts on our City and region for Tourism, employment and long term economic activity,” said Cr Lesslie.
