Senator Payne Encourages Students in the Blue Mountains to Apply for STEM Grants
The latest round of the Australian Government’s Sponsorship Grants opened recently, which helps fund primary and high school students to participate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) events. This includes STEM conferences, competitions and other events in Australia and internationally.
The program offers grants of between $1000 and $20,000. Grants are capped at $1500 per student for domestic and $5000 per student for international events.
The Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, The Hon Karen Andrews MP, said participating in STEM events is essential for young people, so they can meet the challenges of the future workplace and economy.
“Developing scientific, mathematical and digital skills are increasingly important for all young Australians,” Minister Andrews said.
“Technology is evolving so rapidly that it is likely that some of our best students will take up jobs that do not even exist yet.”
Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, welcomed the opening of the program.
"Ensuring that students can participate in cutting-edge STEM events is a great opportunity as the development of STEM skills is critical for young peoples' education and employment prospects," Senator Payne said.
"There is always the possibility that there is a future Michelle Simmons or Eddie Woo in the classroom, so I encourage schools to apply for these grants to help students reach their potential."
Funding is allocated to eligible applicants in order of receipt until exhausted.
