Senator Payne Announces Funding for Men’s Sheds in The Blue Mountains

Over $8,000 has been announced to support Men’s Sheds across the Blue Mountains under Round 19 of the National Shed Development Programme.

Round 19 is aimed at ensuring Men’s Sheds have the correct skills and equipment to engage with their local community in a safe and open environment.

The following Men’s Sheds have received funding to provide safety training and equipment and new tools:

  • Blackheath Area Men's Shed has received $975.
  • Central Mountains Men's Shed has received $3,613.
  • Lower Mountains Men's Shed has received $4,040.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the funding announcement was vital in ensuring that Men’s Sheds continues to provide mental health support to local communities.

“Men’s Sheds are a vital institution - they provide a safe and open environment for local residents to discuss mental health,” Senator Payne said.

“This funding package will support Men’s Sheds across the Blue in acquiring the skills and resources to engage at a grassroots level with local residents.

“Last month, the Lower Mountains Men’s Shed opened their upgraded facilities, so I am glad they are receiving further funding, alongside other Men’s Sheds, to continue their invaluable work.”

Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, congratulated the Macquarie Men’s Sheds on the grants, but also on the tremendous work they continued to do supporting the health and well-being of men in Macquarie.

“Men are known to bottle things up and  Men’s Shed in Macquarie are encouraging men to reach out for the support they need for better health and wellbeing—great for them, their families and the wider community,” Minister Hunt said.

President of the Central Mountains Men’s Shed, Mr Greg Birtles, said the investment into the newly formed Men’s Shed was vital to supporting their community projects.

“As a newly formed Shed, the grant will allow for the purchase of tools and provide education and guidelines to ensure that the activities of the shed are safe and follow best practice,” Mr Birtles said.

“The shed, although in its infancy, has already taken on several community projects. It provides a variety of activities for its members. Most important the shed is a place where men can meet other men, exchange ideas, relax and be supported.

President of the Blackheath Men's Shed, Mr Stuart Hamilton was appreciative of the funding which would cover costs for safety training.

“We appreciate the recent grant that came from Government through its active support of the Men's Shed Development Program. We value the personal interest shown by local Senator Marise Payne in our program,” Senator Payne said.

“The grant will be used for selected shed members to attend First Aid Training Courses. By doing so we'll be able to provide an even safer environment where men can join us to learn new skills or merely to come along for a chat, for a cuppa, or to enjoy a welcoming environment. New faces are always welcome.”

Since 2013, the Government has provided $4.92 million through the National Shed Development Programme to support Men’s Sheds across Australia.
