Sculpture at Scenic World 2020 submissions now open
event that transforms an ancient rainforest into contemporary art gallery.
Scheduled for 9 April–10 May 2020, Sculpture at Scenic World attracts local, national and international artists, lured by a prize pool of $30,000 including the coveted $20,000 Scenic World Major Award.
Set adjacent to the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park, Sculpture at Scenic World is
renowned for its stunning outdoor setting and exceptional calibre of works which centre around themes of environment and sustainability.
Artworks are presented along a 2.4km boardwalk in the heart of the Jamison Valley. The artworks are
sensitively sited and curated to commune with nature and meet rigorous environmental assessments to ensure a 0% ecological footprint.
Artists selected will be in the running for a raft of awards, including the $5,000 Environment Award, the $3,000 Artist Peer Award, the $2,000 Scenic World Staff Choice Award, and the $1,000 Carrington Hotel People’s Choice Prize. All shortlisted artists will also receive a $1,000 artist fee for exhibiting and receive unparalleled installation support.
Curator and Exhibition Manager, Justin Morrissey, said the exhibition aims to showcase innovative installation and sculptural practice in a unique setting.
“We have power running along the boardwalk which enables artists interested in sound, light, video and projection to experiment in the stunning natural environment of the Blue Mountains,” he said.
Artists are encouraged to view artwork image galleries from previous exhibitions online to gain further insight and inspiration into scale, colour, mediums, and interactions with built and natural environments.
“We’re looking for interventions that utilise the built environment like the boardwalk as much as the natural environment. We have a team of highly creative art installers and tree climbers that work with our artists to allow grand visions to be realised.”
Welcoming over 100,000 visitors each year, Sculpture at Scenic World is recognised as a Flagship Event under the NSW Government’s regional events program for its proven success to attract visitors to the Blue Mountains.
The exhibition is also highly regarded among the global arts community for its capacity to recognise the talents of established and emerging artists such as Wendy Teakel, who took home the Scenic World Major Award in 2019 for her work, Cycle.
The judges applauded the Murrumbateman artist, acknowledging Wendy’s installation as a “bold and confident work that is elegantly realised”.
Submissions for the 2020 exhibition close on Monday, 4 November 2019 and all entries will be assessed by an independent panel of arts industry professionals, who will be announced in the coming weeks.
Artists are encouraged to visit the Sculpture at Scenic World website and contact Scenic World directly on JustinM@scenicworld.com.au to discuss their application well before the submission deadline.
