Resealing program drives road renewal across the Blue Mountains
The works, valued at up to $3.2 million, are part of Council’s annual Asset Works Program and are jointly funded by Council and the Australian Government, through the Roads to Recovery grant program.
The program prioritises repairs that reduce risks to public safety, prevent further deterioration and failure, and maintain road function. Signage will be in place to notify the community of the work areas, and residents located adjacent to the works will be notified via a letterbox drop.
Road resealing, also known as resurfacing, is an important part of road maintenance that helps to extend the life of our roads. The process involves spraying a layer of hot bitumen and stone over the existing surface to seal cracks and protects the road from further damage, reducing the need for more expensive repairs.
During the resealing process, on-street parking will be temporarily unavailable. Local traffic will still be able to access driveways, but residents are encouraged to park off the road to assist crews in completing the work safely and efficiently.
Bitumen layers can remain sticky for a few days after being laid, so if possible, it is best to avoid walking and driving on the freshly resealed roads immediately after the works to prevent bringing any marks onto driveways or into homes.
The resealing program includes street sweeping of each location, however loose stones should be expected for some weeks after the works are completed.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill, said: “We’re continuing to make excellent progress with our road renewal program, which is a vital part of our long-term strategy to ensure the safety, resilience, and sustainability of our road network.
“While the accelerated repair program is a great step toward improving our local infrastructure, we understand that there may be some temporary inconvenience for residents during these works. We thank the community for their patience and cooperation as we carry out these essential repairs and urge everyone to please drive to conditions.”
Works valued at $19 million were completed in 2022-23, following multiple natural disasters and damage to almost one third of the City's roads. In 2023-24, Council completed an additional $2.5 million in works.
