Primary Health Network Funds on-site Doctor for Newmarch House
There are approximately 10GPs who service residents at Newmarch House. As many of these doctors have patients in other Residential Aged Care Facilities, and patients in their own practices, it has been important that they not physically visit the facility themselves to minimise the risk of spread of the virus. These GPs have been supporting their patients, many of whom do not have COVID-19, using telehealth in conjunction with other healthcare workers.
This additional ‘on-site’ doctor will focus on the needs of residents without the risk of spreading the infection to other patients in the community and will be the arms and legs for the residents’ usual GP.
Lizz Reay, CEO of Wentworth Healthcare said, “Since the outbreak at Newmarch House, we have been working closely with the GPs who provide care to the residents, and with other agencies including Anglicare, the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, NSW Health and the Commonwealth Department of Health, to ensure that residents and staff have access to appropriate and safe healthcare.”
“There are many points of care that need to be considered in this type of challenging situation. Having a doctor on-site during this time will support the facility’s aged care workers and help facilitate communication, to ensure that all residents are getting the best care possible,” said Ms Reay.“
This is a terrible situation for the residents, their families, staff and everyone involved. All agencies involved have been working closely together behind the scenes, to integrate the complex general practice and hospital care that is required in this unprecedented situation,” said Ms Reay.
Primary Health Networks (PHNs) are independent not-for-profit organisations funded by the Australian Government. PHNs support general practice, and other primary healthcare professionals, to provide high quality patient care. They fund services that meet the needs of their local communities and help to improve service integration between different parts of the health system.
