Portland Pool this year celebrated its 60th season, an amazing milestone for the facility which is still community owned and operated. Even though the pool is not operational in the winter months, the committee is always hard at work on the pool and getting it ready for the next season.

As a 60 year old facility, there is a number of things that need maintenance and replacement, and as a community operated pool, and whilst the pool is supported by the council and a number of local organisations, the fees paid through the gate are the only source of funds each year unless the pool receives grants. Thankfully there have been a number received in past years to assist with bigger costs.

The committee decided a Fundraising Gala Night was needed to celebrate the 60th anniversary and raise much needed funds. The night is being held on 31 August and in a very fitting location - the old Cement works, now known as the Foundations.

“The pool was built over 60 years ago thanks to the generosity of the cement works and the workers, so to be able to have this gala night in the old powerhouse is a fantastic way for us to celebrate,” said Shane Taylor, president of the Pool Committee.

The event will include a sit-down meal, the Coronation Hotel will be running a bar on site and the entertainment is provided by local favourites, Camel Toe, with possibly a few guest appearances throughout the evening.

“For anyone who has yet to attend an event at The Foundations, this fundraiser is your opportunity to come down for an amazing night and help the pool continue into the future,” said Shane.
