Posted: 25 Mar 2025
Blue Mountains City Council is warning residents and visitors to avoid contact with the water in Cataract Creek, Lawson, after being notified of a pollution event by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on March 15

Council immediately began investigating, with support from the EPA, NSW Fire and Rescue and NSW Police.

The cause of the contamination remains under investigation and pedestrians and swimmers are advised to avoid the area, with some walking tracks around the creek remaining closed.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “Council advises against contact with the water in the creek, until the cause of the pollution can be determined.  This applies to humans and pets.

“We thank you for your cooperation while this investigation is underway.”

Warning signs and fencing have been put up at the location to warn those visiting the area that the water has been contaminated and is being investigated.

Council is calling on anyone who may have observed anything being dumped or washed into the creek, to contact BMCC on 4780 5000 or the EPA Pollution hotline on 131 555.
