Poisoned birds found in Katoomba

By Blue Mountains City Council
Posted: 7 Jun 2025
Council is aware of incidents over recent weeks where deceased or sick birds have been found in Prior Place, Katoomba.

The birds have predominantly been sulphur-crested cockatoos.

An investigation is currently underway by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), which is the regulatory authority for these incidents.

Post-mortem and toxicology results, undertaken by the EPA, have identified the birds were poisoned. This has likely been the result of the birds eating poisoned seed.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “This is very sad news and it is very concerning that someone in the community may be intentionally seeking to harm our local wildlife.

“Council has and will continue to assist the EPA in its investigation of these incidents.”

While the Police and NPWS have been notified, primary responsibility for the investigation and any regulatory action rests with the EPA.

The community are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or unwell wildlife found in or around Prior Place, Katoomba, to the EPA via the NSW Environment Line: 131 555
