The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre announces the recipients of the prestigious Penrith Conservatorium of Music 2018 Scholarships.

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of local donors and benefactors, seven scholarships have been awarded to aspiring musicians as young as nine, in the fields of voice, guitar, saxophone, violin and piano. The Scholarships recognise future potential and provide the chance for these seven students to take their gift to the next level - helping set them on a pathway to professional music careers.

The Conservatorium has awarded the following scholarships to local recipients:

  • Mr Alexander Frendo (19) guitar
  • Mr Victor Zhou (16) piano
  • Mr Wellington Dulay (15) saxophone
  • Ms Divinia Eather (16) voice
  • Ms Layla Marinos (17) violin
  • Mr Tom Masters (17) voice
  • Mr Oliver Jin (9) piano
  • Mr Dominic Hart (13) piano

Valda Silvy, Music Programmer at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and coordinator of the scholarship program, said, "The standard of applicants was tremendous and the candidates gave outstanding performances.  It certainly made our job of choosing the seven recipients very difficult, but those selected are a wonderful group of young musicians with very exciting prospects for the future."

For the first time we have a budding saxophonist among our recipients and the youngest ever recipient Oliver Jin who is nine years old.

Oliver has said; "I feel very proud because this is my very first time to get a scholarship. I hope this scholarship will  give me a lot of tips on how to play piano well…. this experience will also be a good start of my better future…. I would like to thank Penrith Conservatorium’s sponsors."

The Conservatorium Scholarships will provide the aspiring musicians with the opportunity to work with highly qualified teachers; receive subsidised tuition, experience musicianship and ensemble activity, and gain access to the Joan family of artists, mentors, courses and concerts – all life changing opportunities that will continue to excite and engage them in their joy of making music.

Penrith Conservatorium of Music offers professional music tuition for students, from beginners to concert standard, as well as early childhood music classes, music theatre and opera performance workshops and amateur productions.

The gift of giving is priceless and we gratefully welcome your support. Visit our website for more information and to make a tax deductible donation securely online towards a scholarship.
