Official Opening of Farmers Creek Shared Pathway Project
The event marks the completion of a twelve month program of shared walking and cycling pathway construction, environmental and other works along the Farmers Creek corridor.
This has led to the transformation of Farmers Creek with approximately 2,500 metres of new shared pathway constructed. Combine with existing sections of pathway, the shared path network now extends from Lake Pillans Wetlands to near Chivers Close Lithgow - a distance of nearly 6 kilometres.
An extensive program of vegetation management was also undertaken removing weeds and restoring natural habitats.
“This has been a fantastic project for revitalising Farmers Creek. It demonstrates what a wonderful natural and recreational asset we have right in the middle of Lithgow,” said the Mayor Maree Statham. “It is already evident by the number of people using the shared path that the community welcomes the opportunity to explore the creek. Seating, picnic shelters, bins and signage have also been installed along the creek to make it a functioning place to spend time.”
The community is invited to the Official Opening, commencing at around 11:15am on Saturday 20 August at Lake Pillans Wetlands. Parking is available a short 5 minute walk away at Lithgow Blast Furnace off Inch Street Lithgow or on Inch Street near Saywell Park.
Lithgow Lions Club will provide a sausage sizzle.
Volunteers are also welcome to participate in a community planting event to be held at Lake Pillans from 9.30am on the day. Contact Steve Fleischmann Mobile: 0419 795 781 or email here to register.
“Becoming a Landcare or Creekcare volunteer is a great way to spend time in nature, to meet people and to contribute to improving the local environment. I encourage the community to get involved,” concluded the Mayor.
The project has been funded through the Australian and NSW Governments’ Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
