No Need to Hang on at Popular Centennial Glen Climbing Site

Loo with a view – The new toilet is now open at Centennial Glen climbing site. Blue Mountains Cragcare Founder Damien Taylor, Cr Don McGregor, Sydney Rock Climbing Club President Andrew Lishmund, Deputy Mayor Cr Chris Van der Kley, Council Natural Areas Management Officer Trish Kidd, Cr Kerry Brown, Cragcare volunteer coordinator Katariina Rahikainen and Cr Kevin Schreiber celebrate the opening (L-R).
A popular Blue Mountains rocking-climbing area has a new toilet, thanks to a partnership with Blue Mountains City Council, Blue Mountains Cragcare and the Sydney Rockclimbing Club.

The toilet was recently installed at Centennial Glen Road, Blackheath, after about eight years of fundraising by local and Sydney recreational climbers that achieved almost $10,000.

Council also received a $19,300 grant through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program in 2016, in order to have the toilet built close to the busy Shipley and Centennial cliff climbs. Council contributed $37,500 to the project overall.

The site has designated accessible parking, as well as parking restrictions, to allow for emergency vehicle access to neighbouring houses and to deter overnight car camping.

Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said, “Council is pleased to have worked in partnership with both local and Sydney recreational climbers to build the toilet facility which meets the needs of an increasingly popular recreation site in a sensitive environmental setting.”

Blue Mountains Cragcare rose over $5,400 for the project, via raffles and fundraising events. The Sydney Rockclimbing Club donated a further $4,000 of their own funds.

Council’s Trackcare Program supports recreational volunteer user groups undertaking the restoration and rehabilitation of walking tracks and trails to professional standards in Council bushland reserves. Volunteers help remediate issues like erosion, trampling of vegetation and damage to walking track infrastructure.

The Trackcare Program ensures Council can work cooperatively with community members on the care and management of important community, conservation and heritage assets.

Volunteers from the local climbing community work four times per year, to undertake restoration and rectification works on walking tracks and popular climbing sites in the upper mountains. Council employs specialist stonemasons to help design and supervise Cragcare workdays, which provides nearly 900 hours of volunteer labour on average each year.
