NSW Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton MP met with representatives from the Blue Mountains Conservation Society and local residents last week at Radiata Plateau, Katoomba at the invitation of Blue Mountains Liberal Candidate Owen Laffin and Upper House MP and Blue Mountains local Shayne Mallard.

Minister Upton was briefed by the Blue Mountains Conservation Society on the 30 year campaign to preserve the Radiata Plateau in public ownership.

“I was pleased to facilitate the visit to Radiata Plateau by Minister Upton,” Owen Laffin said.

“The Minister was impressed by the passionate public campaign to protect the peninsular from development and open it to public use and preservation,” Mr Laffin added.

“As a result the Minister has committed to having her department review the proposal and the ecological merits to acquire Radiata Plateau, should it be on the market sometime in the future,” Mr Laffin said.

Radiata Plateau is the last remaining undeveloped peninsular in the upper Blue Mountains and is an important refuge for rare plant and animal species. It is also the home to significant yet little known Gandangara Aboriginal heritage sites.

“Bringing Radiata Plateau into public hands would have the great benefit of completing the conservation corridor of the southern escarpment from Katoomba to Medlow Bath.”

“The clear desire of the community is to see Radiata Plateau in public hands, accessible to bush-walkers and rock climbers, and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.”

“If I am elected as a member of the Berejiklian Liberal government after March 23, I will continue to strongly support the case for the public acquisition of this rare undeveloped plateau in the Blue Mountains,” Mr Laffin said.
